What Exactly Does An LPC Supervisor Do?

Pedro Carr

When you go to a counseling session, sometimes you notice that another professional aside from your normal counselor is in the room with you. Or, you may notice that your counselor reports to someone else when they have your sessions completed. You'll be asked if an LPC supervisor can sit in on one of your sessions before they come to you if you ever have this happen, and while it's completely normal and can be expected sometimes, are you wondering what this professional is and what they do?

Here are some things that an LPC supervisor does. This way, the next time you see one or you have your counselor refer you to another specialist and you get a supervisor watching over your case, you can know why and what they are all about.

First, what is an LPC supervisor?

Essentially, an LPC supervisor stands for a licensed professional counselor who is also qualified to supervise other counselors. There is additional training or specifications this type of specialist has to have to do their work. They may also be referred to as an LPC-S.

What does this type of supervisor do?

This type of supervisor does what other counselors do, only they have the authority to guide and educate other counselors in a counselor setting or establishment. Similar to how an LPN oversees certified nursing assistants and other professions have supervisors, the world of counseling also has a supervisor. This person oversees other counselors and helps them with their clients as needed, often sitting in on sessions upon request and/or with the permission of a patient.

Why would you see an LPC supervisor?

If you see a counselor regularly, you may encounter a session where an LPC supervisor is present. This doesn't mean that there is anything peculiar or very special about your sessions or even that your counselor needs assistance; often having a supervisor sit in on a session simply is part of protocol or a regular evaluation. A supervisor will usually sit in with your knowledge and approval, and you may have this happen more than once. You can get their input on your sessions if you want to get the most out of your counseling sessions.

Your counselor may work with a supervisor for most of the work they do. This is a great way to help you get the most out of your sessions and can really improve the way your emotional and mental health improves, no matter what your situation is.
